It is a fact that people of color and other marginalized groups are underrepresented in our industry including at MMS. We are committed to being an anti-racist company that disrupts, dismantles and demands more of individuals, institutions and ourselves. As a part of this commitment, our hiring framework seeks untraditional talent not defined by education level or corporate experience, but by life experience, track record, and skill.
Made Music Studio is In for 13: to actionably stomp out systemic racism and create equity in the advertising, marketing, entertainment and production industries by raising the percentage of Black bodies in leadership positions to 13% (reflective of the % of Black people in the US) by 2023. As part of this initiative, we are sharing our employee diversity data in order to publicly track our progress alongside our actionable commitment to changing the numbers within three years.
The changes we made in restructuring our hiring process in 2020 did make measurable impact in diversifying our teams and departments in 2021. Compared to the general population demographics (represented in the outer ring below) which are 6% Asian, 13% Black, 19% Hispanic and 62% White, Made Music’s full-time staff demographics are currently 3% Asian, 10% Black, 7% Hispanic and 80% White.
As we grow, we will continue to prioritize hiring diverse talent. While we are proud to share that the majority of leadership roles at Made Music (VP and above) are held by women, our leadership team is all white. We have fallen short in hiring or promoting Black, Latino/Latina/Latinx, Asian and Indigenous talent into these leadership positions.
Our work will not be done until we diversify our leadership.
